Wallets Marts Castle Douglas Limited staged the 22nd Annual Premier Show and Sale of Pedigree and Commercial Salers Cattle under the auspices of the Salers Cattle Society.
In general, trade for both pedigree and commercial females greatly exceeded expectations, whilst bulls met with a limited demand resulting in very selective bidding.
At the show on Friday the Judge, Mr Gerald Smith, Drumsleed, found his female champion in the form of Lot 4, a senior heifer Darnford Evita from David Watson,Banchory. Evita is by the French Sire Vaillante and out of Cuil Beauty, she was 5 months in-calf to Darnford Elton.
She went on to sell for 4000guineas finding a new home with J Innes & Sons, Dunscroft, Huntly.

Messrs A McConchie, Mains of Penninghame

which made 4400gns to Alan Howatson, Risk, Newton Stewart.
With a host of buyers forward from both the North of Scotland and Wales; the trade for the commercial section can only be described as electric. A pair of Salers X in-calf heifers from Mains of Pennighame topped thier section at £2250. This was followed at £1700 for a pen of three in-calf heifers from Stanbury Manor, Cornwall.
Champion pen of commerical heifers came from Cuil, with four bulling heifers which sold for £1700 to Messrs Guild Jones, Rhayader. Topping the yearling heifers and heifer stirk section at £1650 was a pen of six from Mains of Penninghame selling to Alex and Jonathan Wright, Pinmore Mains, Girvan.

Peter Donger travelled from Northamptonshire to place the Salers cattle at the recent Balmoral Show, selecting as his Supreme Champion an outstanding young bull from the Drumlegagh herd of John Elliott and family, Newtownstewart.
"Drumlegagh Felix" was hailed as an exceptional example of the breed by the judge, and went on to be placed second reserve in the Junior Interbreed Championships when competing against twelve other breeds.
Felix is sired by Blason, a former Balmoral Champion for the Elliott's. This stock bull is continuing to breed well having already produced one Balmoral Champion in 2011, and progeny remaining in strong demand.
The Elliott family also secured the Junior Championship and Best Exhibitor entry with their Overall winner.
The Reserve Championship was awarded to a very stylish two year old heifer from Patrick Maginn, Downpatrick. "Lisnamaul Eimear" is out of the home bred cow Lisnamaul Barbie, and sired by Aston.
Lisnamaul Eimear - P J Magin
This winning duo then teamed up for the hotly contended Interbreed Beef Pairs Competition which was judged by Colin Hutchings. There was great delight when the pair were tapped out as Reserve Champions, the highest result for the breed to date at Balmoral.
County Armagh breeder George McCall chalked up the Reserve Junior Championship with his home bred heifer "Carrick View Heloise". There is full French breeding behind this prize winner who was born in February 2012.

Seawell Extra is a home bred bull from the Dongers of Seawell Grounds, Foxley, Northants and is out of a heifer bought from the Bressons and is by Union. Extra was retained as a stock bull for his exceptional length and size. He is a long, clean bull. Heifers are calving very easy to him.
