JOHNES - April 2012 In our last newsletter we wrote to you advising that your council considered it necessary for its members to join one of the reputable CHeCS Herd Health Schemes and to seek veterinary advice without delay to commence the evaluation and eradication of the following diseases BVD, JOHNES, LEPTOSPIROSIS and IBR in a bid to protect yours and the Salers national herd from such diseases. It was also indicated that your council was concentrating on controlling these 4 disease in the cattle presented for sale at Society endorsed sales, having already embarked on this with the introduction of BVD FREE sales in 2010, we are now turning our attention to the others.
Following a presentation to Council by an "expert in their field" and the subsequent lengthy discussion we concluded, at this time, we must concentrate our attentions on the establishment of individual herds JOHNES status and their monitoring policy.
In order to do this and to minimise the risk of selling or buying cattle, your council has agreed that, commencing at the Salers Premier Sale held at Wallets Marts in Castle Douglas, November 2012 and at ALL subsequent Salers Society endorsed sales;
ALL cattle presented for sale must be from vendors who are:
Members of a CHeCHS Herd Health Scheme, and who Comply with the current Salers Society ruling for BVD FREE sales, and have Established their herds "JOHNES" status and are actively monitoring and culling diseased animals from their herd.
Please note that members unable to fulfil the above requirements will NOT be allowed entry to Salers Society Sales.
We strongly recommend, if you haven't already done so, you contact one of the many CHeCHS Herd health Scheme providers and seek their advice on how to protect your herd from any of the above mentioned diseases before it becomes too late.

BVD - July 2010 For a number of years, the society has followed a policy of advising our members to join one of the various CHeCS accredited health schemes to ensure that your cattle have a clean bill of health and are performing to the best of their ability. Knowing the health status of our animals is becoming more and more relevant in today's market for breeding cattle. As a result of this and after much consultation council has agreed that with effect from 1st November 2010 ALL cattle being entered for official society sales MUST be;
A BVD CHeCS (or progressing towards) accredited herd having tested negative for BVD antigen or Each animal having been individually tested BVD antigen negative
All such animals must be fully BVD vaccinated prior to sale. Batch number and dates of vaccination will be required. Females that are to be sold in calf must be from a BVD accredited herd or individually tested BEFORE service, with the BVD status of the bull being determined BEFORE he serves females that are to be sold.
Cattle not fulfilling this criteria WILL NOT be eligible for sale at official society sales.
When entering cattle into official society sales vendors will be asked to complete and sign a health declaration form indicating if your herd is CHeCS accredited and what disease the accreditation covers or if not CHeCS accredited you will be required to indicate each individual animal's health status eg, date tested, disease tested for and date vaccinated etc.
This is the initial step towards CHeCS accredited Salers Cattle Society sales. At first we will concentrate on BVD accreditation and Johnes testing of herds however we recommend that when making the decision to begin testing your herd you also consider testing for IBR and Lepto' . The commencement date for full accreditation sales is still at consultation stage as we need to ensure that all members are given adequate opportunity to reach this stage in time for the sales, we will be in touch regarding timescales and finite details as soon as possible.
You will have many questions for which you will need answers, to many the only way to find the answers is to begin testing, however any of the following organisations will be more than willing to help.
